The largest stadium constructed almost entirely out of white marble is the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece, with a current capacity of 45,000. First built in the sixth century BC, rebuilt in marble in 329 BC by archon Lycurgus, and enlarged again in 140AD, it was then renovated several times during the 19th and 20th centuries. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
