The first sports stadium to boast a retractable grass pitch was the multi-functional GelreDome in Arnhem, Netherlands, which opened on 25 March 1998. Home to football side Vitesse Arnhem, the whole playing surface sits in a giant concrete tray that can be slid outside of the main stadium during concerts. The conversion takes just five hours. The likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna and Bon Jovi have performed concerts there.
