As their name suggests, worm lizards or amphisbaenians superficially resemble earthworms and are therefore generally limbless. However, of the 180-plus species currently recognized, four of them, known as ajolotes Bipes spp. – and confined to Mexico – are readily distinguished from all of the others by possessing a pair of small forelimbs with large clawed feet, which are positioned just behind the head so that they are sometimes mistaken for ears!
