South America's poison-dart frogs are named after their extremely toxic skin secretions that are used by native Indian tribes to tip their blowgun darts. The largest species is the Colombian golden poison-dart frog Phyllobates terribilis, which is up to 6 cm long, and can weigh almost 30 g, but remained undiscovered by science until 1974.
