Tegus are large, predatory lizards belonging to the family Teiidae, and are native to Central and South America. The largest tegu species is the black-and-white tegu Tupinambis merianae, a terrestrial lizard native to the tropical rainforests, savannahs and semi-deserts of Argentina and elsewhere in east and central South America. Popularly kept as a pet by reptile fanciers, it can grow to 1.4 m in length and a weight of 7 kg.
