In April 2010, a 30-month-old boy from Saudi Arabia became the youngest patient to undergo a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) procedure – bariatric surgery to reduce obesity. The surgery, carried out at the Prince Sultan Military Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was performed to aid the toddler whose morbid obesity had caused obstructive sleep apnea and bowing of the legs. Many non-surgical treatments to improve diet and aid weight loss had been carried out to no avail. The surgery was undertaken when the child weighed 33 kg (72 lb) and had a BMI of 41. Two years after the surgery the boy had lost 27% of his original body weight, and weighed 24 kg (52 lb) with a BMI of 24. The previous youngest patient, aged five, was also from Saudi Arabia.
