A Test match record crowd of 91,092 people packed out the four-tiered Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on day one of the 4th Ashes Test between Australia and England in Melbourne, Australia, on 26 December 2013. The previous single day record – 90,800 – was set when Australia hosted the West Indies at the same venue in February 1961.
The record was set after Australia had clinched the five-match Ashes series, following comfortable wins in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
At the close of play on day one of the 4th Test, England were 226 for 6. Australia went on to win the match by eight wickets on their way to a 5-0 series whitewash.
Melbourne's Boxing Day Test match has become a "landmark event", according to Cricket Australia's chief executive James Sutherland.
According to the official website, the MCG's capacity is 100,000.
