The largest species of gerbil is the great gerbil Rhombomys opimus, which measures up to 20 cm in head-and-body length, and with a total length that can exceed 40 cm. Native to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and several other Central and East-Central Asian countries, it was only shown to be a separate species from the common gerbil during the 1960s.
