Hedgehogs were first domesticated during the 4th Century BC by the Romans. They were primarily raised for their meat and quills, but were also kept as pets, just as several different species are today. The Romans domesticated a relative of the Algerian hedgehog Atelerix algirus.
The most popular pet hedgehogs today are the Egyptian long-eared hedgehog Hemiechinus auritus auritus, the Indian long-eared hedgehog H. collaris, and in particular the African pygmy hedgehog, which is a hybrid of the Algerian hedgehog and the four-toed hedgehog A. albiventris.
