The smallest species of bromeliad is the Spanish moss Tillandsia usneoides. Native to the USA, through Central America and into South America as far south as Argentina, it grows hanging down from tree branches and consists of a slender stem bearing tiny flowers and alternate series of leaves that produce hanging thread-like chains up to 6 m long.
