In the spring of 1962, Timmie Jean Lindsey from Texas, USA, became the first woman to undergo breast-implant surgery. Frank Gerow (Canada), who had previously performed dermabrasion on Lindsey's chest – a procedure to erase her tattoos by removing upper layers of skin – and his colleague Thomas Cronin had developed a silicone implant for women whose breasts had sagged following multiple pregnancies. Lindsey agreed to the groundbreaking surgery in exchange for surgery to pin back her ears, which she was self-conscious about. The surgery, which was carried out at Jefferson Davis hospital in Houston, Texas, saw Lindsey's breast size increase from a B to a C cup.
