In July 2008 scientists from the US Geological Survey and the American Museum of Natural History discovered that the Congo River, which spans 10 countries in Africa, has a maximum depth of at least 220 m. The measurements were performed in the Lower Congo River using echo sounders, differential GPS and Acoustic Doppler current profilers.
