Antartica
What
-93.2 degree(s) Celsius
Where
Antarctica
When

In December 2013, NASA announced that they had found that a particular high ridge located in Antarctica was measured by satellite as having the lowest radiometric (measured by radiation, or lack of it) temperature on Earth. Temperatures in the hollows on the ridge drop to minus 93.2 Celsius (-135.8F) on Antarctic winter nights. Pinpointing this coldest place on Earth was completed using a total of 32 years' worth of collected data obtained from a range of satellite instruments. The US team of scientists began by sifting through data delivered by the Landsat 8 satellite, and then used data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on several National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites, before finally using data from the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on Landsat 8 to establish this record lowest radiometric temperature.
