The most recently extinct rhinoceros is the Western black rhinoceros Diceros bicornis longipes. Once native to much of sub-Saharan Africa's savannahs, due to extensive poaching for its horns its numbers decreased dramatically – and even preservation efforts only halted its slump temporarily. By the year 2000, only an estimated 10 individuals survived. It was last seen in its final reported country of occurrence, Cameroon, in 2006, and on 10 November 2011 it was declared extinct by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources). There are no known specimens in captivity.
