The world’s largest spiral access to a bridge is the 180-metre-diameter final section of the elevated approach to the Nanpu Bridge in Shanghai, China. The 423-metre main span over the Huangpu River is accessed to the west via the massive spiralling road along which cars drive two complete rotations. Opened on 20 June 1991, it was co-designed by the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute and Tongji Architectural Design and Research Institute.
