In 1987, it won nine awards including Best Special Effects, Best Editing, Best Art Direction and Video of the Year. "Sledgehammer" won 1987 awards for Video of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Concept Video, Best Direction in a Video, Best Editing, Best Male Video, Best Overall Performance, Best Special Effects and Most Experimental Video.

The next most successful video at the MVAs is Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance", which won seven awards in 2010.
