Plunge pools are lakes or depressions formed at the base of waterfalls due to the erosive action of the water. The largest known on Earth is in Perth Canyon, offshore Australia, which measures around 300 m deep and 2 km by 6 km in area. This plunge pool was created in prehistoric times by a waterfall when the region was above sea level.
