On 6 July 2011, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory took a series of image showing Comet C/2011 N3’s last moments as it disintegrated in the atmosphere of the Sun. The comet had only been discovered two days earlier and had an estimated nucleus size of around 9 to 45 m across. In its final moments the comet had reached just 100,000 km from the Sun’s surface and was travelling at around 2.1 million kph before it broke up and was vapourised.
