Despite their name, horseshoe crabs are not crustaceans, but are aquatic relatives of arachnids. Relatively unchanged in appearance for millions of years, the largest living species is the common or Atlantic horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus, which measures up to 60 cm long. It is native to the northern Atlantic coast of North America and the Gulf of Mexico.
