The newest species of slug is the giant pink slug endemic to Mount Kaputar in New South Wales, Australia. It was long thought to be merely an unusual colour variety of the smaller, less brightly coloured red triangle slug Triboniophorus graeffei, but in June 2013 genetic results revealed that this spectacular, vividly coloured mollusc was a completely separate but hitherto-unrecognized species in its own right. It is now awaiting a formal scientific name and description.
At up to 20 cm long this is also the largest native species of land slug in the whole of Australia.
