In June 2012, Nielsen BookScan (an organization that compiles point-of-sale data from around the world for the book-selling industry) announced that E L James’s novel Fifty Shades of Grey had achieved one million paperback sales in just 11 weeks – destroying the previous record, held by Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, which took 36 weeks to sell a million copies.
According to online retailer Amazon, Fifty Shades of Grey was the first e-book to sell a million copies for its popular Kindle e-reader.
