Least classifiable insect
- Who
- Unidentified planthopper 'troll' nymph
- Where
- Suriname
- When
- 18 November 2013
The least classifiable insect is currently a newly discovered nymph (juvenile) form of planthopper. Resembling a 1990s "Troll Doll" toy figure on account of the mass of hair-like strands of waxy secretions protruding from its abdomen – and discovered in the hitherto-unexplored rainforest of southeastern Suriname – its species has so far defied precise classification. This is because it superficially resembles various nymphs from at least four different taxonomic families of planthopper – Dictyopharidae, Lophopidae, Nogodinidae and Tropiduchidae.
