The first weather satellite to provide useful data was America's TIROS-1. "TIROS" stood for "Television Infra Red Observation Satellite", and the satellite was launched on 1 April 1960 measuring 107 cm (42 in) in diameter, 48 cm (19 in) in height and 123 kg (270 lb) in weight. It remained operational for 78 days, during which time it employed its high- and low-resolution cameras to record images of cloud formations that were used by meteorologists worldwide to understand weather systems.
This was the first in a series of TIROS satellites, some of which still orbit and send pictures today under the TIROS-N programme.
