Roger Federer (Switzerland) reached an unprecedented 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals, a sequence that started with a fourth-round defeat of Ivo Karlovic at the Wimbledon Championships in London, UK, on 28 June 2004 and ended with a fourth-round win against Gilles Simon at the French Open in Paris, France, on 2 June 2013. Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky ended the 17-time Grand Slam winner's record-breaking run with a second-round victory at Wimbledon on 26 June 2013.
In 2013, Federer suffered his earliest Wimbledon defeat since losing in round 1 in 2002, and his earliest Grand Slam defeat since losing in round 1 at the French Open in 2003.
Federer suffered his first defeat to a player ranked outside the top 100 (Stakhovsky was ranked 116) since losing to Richard Gasquet (ranked 101) at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2005, and it was also the earliest defeat for a defending Wimbledon men's singles champion since Lleyton Hewitt lost to Ivo Karlovic in round 1 in 2003.
