Raymond Poulidor (FRA) finished in the top three of the Tour de France eight times. He came second on three occasions (1964, 1965 and 1974) and third five times (1962, 1966, 1969, 1972 and 1976).
Poulidor was known as the "éternel second" because he never managed to win the famed yellow jersey in 14 attempts, despite coming so close. The only other cyclist to have stepped onto the Tour de France podium eight times is Lance Armstrong – however, he was later stripped of those places having been found to have used performance-enhancing drugs. Poulidor claims to be the first Tour de France cyclist to have been drug-tested, when he was approached by officials in his hotel during the 1966 Tour.
