The smallest species of squirrel is the African pygmy squirrel Myosciurus pumilio. Native to Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in Central Africa, it has a head-and-body length of 6.0–7.5 cm, and a tail length of 5–6 cm, making it slightly smaller than a house mouse.
