The smallest species of rhinoceros is the Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis). Once widespread across south-east Asia but now confined to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, this rhino has a head and body length of 2.3–3.2 m (7 ft 6 in–10 ft 6 in), a tail length of 35–70 cm (1 ft 2 in–2 ft 3 in), and a shoulder height of 1.1–1.5 m (3 ft 7 in–4 ft 11 in), with a maximum reported weight of 2 tonnes (4,400 lb) for one exceptional specimen, though they tend to average between 500 and 1,000 kg (1,100–2,200 lb).

The last remaining male and female specimens of Sumatran rhino on Malaysian Borneo died in May 2019 and November 2019, respectively, making this species now extinct in that country.
