Relative to body size, the bird species with the longest toes (including its very elongate claws) is the northern jacana Jacana spinosa, ranging from Mexico and the Greater Antilles to Panama. Although its body is only chicken-sized, when its four very lengthy toes, each roughly 7 cm long, are fully extended, they span an area as large as 168 square cm, and enable it to walk on lily pads and other floating vegetation on ponds and marshes.
