The rarest kingfisher is the Tuamotu kingfisher Todiramphus gambieri. Confined entirely to a very small area on the single island of Niau in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia, only 125–135 individuals still exist as of 2013. It is threatened by introduced rats and cats, as well as by cyclone-induced habitat destruction.
