The largest species of South American waterfowl – but also the smallest species of true swan – is the black-necked swan Cygnus melancoryphus. It is 102–124 cm long, sports a wingspan of 135–177 cm, and weighs 3.5–6.7 kg. Breeding in Chile and the Falkland Islands, it migrates northwards in winter to Brazil and Paraguay. The coscoroba swan Coscoroba coscoroba is slightly smaller, but is no longer considered to be closely related to true swans and may well be a swan in name only.
