The earliest known encyclopaedia was compiled by Speusippus (post 408–c. 338 BC), a nephew of Plato, in Athens, Greece, c. 370 BC. As of 2013, this encyclopaedia would have been compiled 2,383 years ago.
The earliest encyclopaedia compiled by a Briton was Liber exerptionum by Scottish monk Richard (d. 1173) at St Victor's Abbey, Paris c. 1140.
