Tenrecs constitiute a family of insectivores native primarily to Madagascar but also including three aquatic species from mainland Africa. The largest tenrec is the giant otter shrew Potamogale velox, an aquatic species native to central Africa – particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo – that looks remarkably like a small otter in outward form. It measures up to 64 cm long, and weighs up to 0.95 kg.
