The largest species of bandicoot is the giant bandicoot (Peroryctes broadbenti), which weighs up to 5 kg and is the size of a common rat. Little is known about this elusive species, which is native to lowland forests in Papua New Guinea. It is currently represented by fewer than 30 museum specimens.
