The rarest species of fox is the island fox Urocyon littoralis, native to six of the eight Channel Islands in California, USA, each of which has its own separate subspecies of this species. In 2002, a total number of 1,500 specimens was estimated (of which some of the island subspecies numbered less than 100), since when the species has continued to decline, due in part to predation by golden eagles, disease via introduced parasites, and habitat destruction. It is categorized as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN.
