The rarest species of raccoon is the Cozumel or pygmy raccoon Procyon pygmaeus. Found only on Cozumel Island (a mere 478 square km in area), situated off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, it is categorized as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN, and only 250–300 specimens are now believed to exist.
