The great white shark Carcharodon carcharias is rarely maintained in captivity. The longest period in which this species has been successfully exhibited is 198 days, during 2004, when the Monterey Bay Aquarium's first specimen, a female, was on display before being released into Monterey Bay, California, USA. During her time on display, she was viewed by almost a million visitors to the aquarium.
