The heaviest species of lungfish is the Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri. It can attain an adult weight of 40 kg, and is much bulkier than the three African species and the single South American species, which are all much more elongate and serpentine in form. Only six species, all freshwater, of this once-thriving group of fishes survive in modern times.
