The most powerful electric marine fish is the black torpedo ray Torpedo nobiliana, native to the Mediterranean and adjacent parts of the eastern Atlantic, which is also the world's largest torpedo ray. It normally produces 50–60 volts at 1 amp. However, discharges of 220 volts – yielding up to 1 kilowatt of electricity – have been measured. The ray uses its electric charge to stun or kill prey, but as salt water is a better conductor of electricity than fresh water, it does not need to produce discharges as high as that of the electric eel of South American rivers.
