Not only the world's rarest stingray but also a contender for the world's rarest fish of any kind, the Java stingaree Urolophus javanicus is still known only from a single specimen, a 33-cm-long female, caught off Jakarta in Java, Indonesia, in July 1862. It is categorized as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN, but as of November 2013 may already be extinct.
