The Briolette of India is widely considered the oldest known cut diamond. It is thought that this magnificent 90.38-carat colourless diamond dates back to the 12th century, although it has been shown to come from South Africa, rather than India. The diamond was acquired in around 1137–1152 by Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Louis VII of France. It then passed from her second husband, Henry II of Britain, to her son, King Richard the Lion Heart of Britain. Most recently, Harry Winston owned, sold and then bought again the Briolette, which he showed off in 1970 for the last time in public. The exact current whereabouts of the Briolette of India are unknown, but it is thought that it is in the ownership of a European family.
