A Test match, three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20) determined the winner of the multi-format Ashes series between England Women and Australia Women in August 2013. Captained by Charlotte Edwards, hosts England clinched the series by 12 points to four. The series offered a potential six points to the winner of the Test match and two points for each of the six limited-overs matches. The Test match was drawn (two points each) before England won two of the three ODIs and whitewashed their opponents in the three T20 games to regain the Ashes crown they lost on Australian soil in 2011.
The results of the seven-match series, contested at six different venues in England on 11-31 August 2013, were as follows:
1. Test, Wormsley, 11-14 August - Draw (two points each)
2. ODI, Lord's, 20 August - Australia won by 27 runs
3. ODI, Hove, 23 August - England won by 51 runs
4. ODI, Hove, 25 August - England won by five wickets
5. T20, Chelmsford, 27 August - England won by 15 runs
6. T20, Southampton, 29 August - England won by five wickets
7. T20, Chester-le-Street, 31 August - England won by seven wickets
England Women were confirmed as series winners when they won the second T20 match at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, UK, on 29 August 2013, taking an unassailable 10-4 lead with one match to go.
The new format was the brainchild of Clare Connor, head of women's cricket at the England and Wales Cricket Board (and the woman Charlotte Edwards replaced as England captain), and could now be used to revive Test cricket in the men's game.
Australia needed only to win a one-off Test on home soil in 2011 to win the Ashes, but the 2014 series in Australia will be contested across all three formats.
