Australia's Argyle Diamond Mine is the largest producer of natural coloured diamonds. It is the first successful commercial diamond mine, and it exploits a volcanic pipe of lamproite (mineral-rich volcanic rocks). The Argyle is also the largest diamond producer by volume, although – owing to the low proportion of gem-quality diamonds – is not the leader by value. It is, however, the only known significant source of pink diamonds, and produces more than 90% of the world's product. In addition, it provides a large proportion of other naturally coloured diamonds, including champagne, cognac and rare blue diamonds.
Argyle is currently transitioning from an open pit mine to an underground mine.
