In recent years a new technique for growing synthetic diamonds has emerged. Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) produces laboratory-grown synthetic diamonds. In April 2013, the Gemological Institute of America's New York laboratory tested a 2.16-ct CVD synthetic diamond from Scio Diamond Technology Corporation, USA – the largest artificial diamond seen so far. The marquise cut diamond, which measured 13.42 x 6.73 x 3.94 mm, was more than twice the size of a 1.05-ct pear shape synthetic examined in 2010. The Scio diamond had J/K colour with a brownish tint, and only small fractures, pinpoints, and non-diamond-carbon black inclusions that resulted in a SI2 clarity grade.
