Largest budget for a JRPG (Japanese role-playing game)

With videogames breaking into mainstream culture more each year, it feels as though game budgets creep higher to Hollywood movie territory with every passing year. Yet it's a golden oldie – Final Fantasy VII (Square/SCEE, 1997) – that holds the record. With a reported $45 million spent on production and a $100 million promotion campaign that saw the game advertised in prime-time slots during Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, Square along with Sony America and Europe poured more into the classic JRPG than any publisher has done for any game of its genre before or since. Adjusted for inflation, the 2013 equivalent figure is closer to $207 million.
