Taiwanese turkey gaifan is a popular dish all over Taiwan and in Chinese communities outside Taiwan. It dates back as a dish to 1943, when it originally used chicken, which is associated with worship in Taiwan. In 1949 turkey replaced chicken, as it was cheaper and the Taiwanese were not a prosperous people at the time. The son of the recipe founder oversaw this record attempt and was the head chef on the day.

The dish combines turkey, salt, soy sauce, onions and rice, though there may be other ingredients added also. Yellow radish pickle was added to this dish. 210kg of turkey meat and 360kg of uncooked rice was used in the preparation of this dish.

Free range turkey from Yunlin was used for the record dish, with the birds having been slaughtered the day before.

More than 2,000 portions of turkey rice were distributed to members of the public after the record announcement.
