The Soul series has sold 12,140,000 across multiple platforms as of 6 August 2013, making it the most successful weapons-based fighting videogame series.
When it comes to fighting games, it seems that punches and kicks have always been more popular than claymores and katanas. Even so, there are a number of weapon-based fighting games that have stood the test of time. Samurai Shodown (SNK, 1993) is one of the earliest examples with many sequels to its name while Battle Arena Toshinden (Tamsoft, 1995) did good number on the PlayStation before Soul Edge (Namco, 1996) stole its thunder.
