A gold Nintendo World Championships (Nintendo, 1990) cartridge – one of just 26 in existence – sold for $100,088 on eBay on 5 February 2014. Listed by user "mtnlife", the cartridge was said to be in very good condition although its label was damaged. According to the website Price Charting, this very rare cartridge tends to fetch an average of $26,677.

When Nintendo created 116 NES cartridges featuring modified builds of Super Mario Bros (Nintendo, 1985), Rad Racer (Nintendo, 1987) and Tetris (Nintendo, 1984) for a gaming competition that toured 30 US cities in 1990, the console giant made what would become the most sought-after item for videogame collectors – particularly the 26 copies that were printed in gold. The version of Rad Racer on these gold cartridges is the rarest NES racing game in the console’s library, with an auction value exceeding $15,000.
