The rear third-person view showing the exterior of the car is still the default camera in modern racers, and it all began with Turbo (Sega, 1981). The game involves Formula One-inspired cars racing through street circuits, and was controlled by a full-size steering wheel in its original arcade cabinet. Sega’s early racer wasn’t just a trailblazer when it came to viewpoint. It’s also the first full-colour racing game to use sprite-scaling, a technique of scaling a sprite-based image up or down based on its distance to the camera to give the impression of depth.
