The most appearances in the English football (soccer) top division is 848 and was achieved by Peter Shilton (UK) who played as a goalkeeper for Leicester City, Stoke City, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Derby County in the first division from 3 May 1966 to 11 May 1991.
In total Peter Shilton made 1,390 senior apperances in all competitions, other than the 848 top division appearances he made another 157 apperances in lower leagues, 86 FA Cup apperances, 102 League Cup apperances, 125 international caps (a national record) and 72 apperances in a variety of tournaments including the European Cup, UEFA Cup and the Charity shield. Shilton passed the 1000 league game mark on 22 December 1996 playing in the third division for Leyton Orient against Brighton and Hove Albion. He retired from football aged 47. He currently holds the record for the most clean sheets in the World Cup (10) which was equalled in 2006 by Fabian Barthez.
