With sales of 2.82 million in its first month of release, Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo 2014) is the fastest-selling game for Nintendo's Wii U. Released on 29 May 2014 in Japan and the following day in North America and Europe, it shifted 1.2 million copies in the first four days alone – making it the fastest-selling over an opening weekend. Mario Kart 8 beat Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, 2008), which had sold 1.98 million units in the first month of release in April 2008.
